Is the Internet Constantly Changing, All The Time?

Trick question, that one. Sure, the answer is yes…. But in another sense, the answer is, no.

It’s like saying, “Is the ocean changing all the time?”

Yeah. It’s in constant flux.

But it’s also been pretty much the same animal for a very long time.

The easiest way to sell you some flash-in-the-pan thing is to tell you, ‘That dang Internet, it’s changing constantly. Turn your head for one dang minute, and you could miss an entire revolution. Here, buy this software, it will magically enable you to make seventy thousand dollars a month.’

Look pal, any revolution that only lasts one minute and barely leaves traces after it subsides, ain’t no revolution.

The following revolutions mattered. In other words they really were revolutions:

1) The invention of Email

2) The invention of the Hyperlink

3) The invention of the Search Engine

4) The invention of the Banner Ad

5) The invention of Instant Messaging

6) The invention of the Online Auction

7) The invention of Pay Per Click

8) The invention of Streaming Audio

9) The invention of Streaming Video

10) The invention of Instant-Upload Photo / Video Sites (i.e. MySpace, Flickr and YouTube)

11) The invention of the Wiki

12) The invention of the Blog

Give or take a few, a dozen revolutions during the last couple of decades. One every year or two. Yeah, that’s fast. Dog years. Internet Time and all that. You wanna bring on another revolution? I’m all for it.
